Johannesburg is usually named, Africa's New York and is a very fast paced cosmopolitan metropolis that has a great choice of accommodation for all sizes of pockets. Each part of Johannesburg has its own style and character. The recent development of business moving out of the city centre and heading to the northern suburbs has changed the landscape of Johannesburg. This has meant that the city centre would not be as safe as it once was. There are sights that one must see in the centre anyways. The Carlton Centre is worth a look and the view from the top will take your breath away. The Johannesburg Fort has a great sense of history about it. Just south of the city centre is Gold Reef City and the theme park here is based on the gold prospectors searching for the coloured rock. The city centre has some top class hotels at great value prices and would be highly recommended. Around the eastern suburbs, you will find Little Chinatown in Cyrildene. Further east is Bedford View, which is a sleepy suburb and is near to Don Johannesburg International Airport. There are lots of hotels at the airport. In Soweta, you can take the chance of staying with a local family. Also one can travel to the Lesedi multi cultural village, which is less than an hours drive from the centre. One can stay with a rural Zulu family in Zulu beehive huts. Parktown offers some affluent accommodation, as well as Melville with its great nightlife and many fine restaurants, and lots of great value guesthouses. The Northern suburbs are the modern Johannesburg with its shopping malls and business complexes. Places like the Sandton City Shopping centre and the Sandton Square offer one the best shopping and dining in Africa. There is lots of accommodation around here with great style and comfort. |
